Flight-Tracker.net exists to do two things: show aircraft that are broadcasting within the receiver network's coverage, and explain how public flight tracking works in plain English.
The live map uses aggregated ADS-B observations collected within available receiver coverage. Every aircraft shown is broadcasting its own position, altitude and speed - We process those observations and render the resulting snapshot on the map.
Around the tracker we've built a full reference library: 139 major airports, 51 airlines with their callsigns and hubs, 32 aircraft types, 255 tracked flights, and 56 magazine-style guides covering everything from squawk codes to jet lag.
Data and editorial methodology
This page is the canonical methodology and dataset description for Flight-Tracker.net. Every programmatic airport, airline, aircraft and flight profile links back here so readers and machines can distinguish measured observations from maintained reference facts.
Where the data comes from
Nothing on the live map is simulated or interpolated. Aircraft fitted with ADS-B transmit their own GPS position roughly once a second on 1090 MHz, in the clear, and volunteers around the world run receivers that pick those broadcasts up and pool them. We take a snapshot of that pooled feed and draw it. If an aircraft is missing from the map it is almost always because no receiver could hear it, not because we filtered it out.
Route and airframe details are layered on top. When we meet a callsign for the first time we look up its origin, destination and aircraft once, then store the result in our own database and serve every later request from there. That means the site keeps working when an upstream service is slow or down, and it means the pages get more accurate the longer we run. Nothing is trusted forever: confirmed records are rechecked after a month, and lookups that came back empty are retried within hours.
How we handle facts
Two kinds of information sit side by side on this site, and we treat them differently.
- Observed data is what aircraft actually broadcast. It is the most trustworthy thing we have, so when it disagrees with anything else, it wins. We have carried curated routes that were simply wrong until live tracking corrected them, and the correction is automatic.
- Reference data, things like runway counts, fleet sizes and annual passenger numbers, comes from published sources and is reviewed by hand. It ages between reviews, so read those figures as recent rather than live.
Our guides are written to make sense to someone who has never heard of multilateration and still be worth reading if you fly for a living. Where a guide makes a claim that matters, it cites a source you can check yourself. A guide shows its original publication date and its latest substantive update; a reference page shows an explicit editorial review date rather than a filesystem timestamp.
Review and correction process
- Identity fields and codes are checked against an official operator, IATA directory or the underlying open dataset.
- Volatile values such as fleets, destinations and passenger totals are labelled approximate and remain dated snapshots between reviews.
- Observed routes can override curated routes when stored ADS-B evidence shows the reference record is wrong.
- Reported errors are checked against a first-party or primary source, corrected in the underlying record, and then re-audited across every affected template.
Send corrections through the corrections contact with the URL, field, date observed and a source where possible. The site does not manufacture named authors, credentials, reviews or first-hand experience.
Reference dataset
Dataset version 2026.07.29, reviewed 2026-07-29 by the Flight-Tracker.net Editorial Team. It contains selected records for 139 airports, 51 airlines, 32 aircraft types and 255 curated tracked flights. This is a selective aviation reference library, not a complete census.
The machine-readable distribution is available as JSON. Airport fields include codes, name, city, country, coordinates and runway count. Airline fields include codes, callsign, country, alliance and approximate fleet size. Aircraft fields include ICAO type, manufacturer, range and capacity. Flight records include the ticket number, callsign, route and typical aircraft.
Provenance: airport identity and runway reference data are based on published aviation datasets; airline codes are cross-checked against established industry directories; live positions and observation history come from aggregated transponder observations; model specifications are checked against manufacturers and linked identity references.
Reuse and citation: the dataset terms are defined under content and attribution. Cite “Flight-Tracker.net reference data, version 2026.07.29” and link to the relevant canonical entity page. Live position data remains subject to the upstream provider's terms.
Limitations: reference figures change between reviews, typical aircraft can be substituted, receiver coverage is uneven, and an observed aircraft position does not establish an airline's official delay or cancellation status.
A note on accuracy and AI use
Positions come from transponder broadcasts, but the world snapshot is cached before it reaches your browser. It normally refreshes every minute with authenticated source access and up to every 15 minutes otherwise; the map shows the exact age. Coverage depends on receiver density: it is strongest over well-covered land and thinner over oceans, deserts and polar routes. Flight data on this site is for information and enjoyment - Always confirm times with your airline before heading to the airport, and never rely on it for anything operational.
Automated tools may assist with structure, comparison or drafting, but published facts must remain traceable to the listed data or sources and are reviewed under the same rules. AI output is not treated as a source. No biography, credential, quote, observation or operational claim is invented to make a page appear more authoritative.
Independence
We are not affiliated with any airline, airport or aircraft manufacturer, and nobody pays to appear on the site or to be described in a particular way. The tracker is free, needs no account to use, and carries no advertising trackers. An optional account only exists so you can save what you follow, and our privacy policy lists exactly what that stores.
