How to read these numbers

Every number here comes from one live snapshot of world air traffic. It is the same data that draws the live map.

"Aircraft tracked now" counts every transponder we are receiving. That includes A380s and small gliders alike.

"Countries of registration" means where a plane is registered, not where it is flying. An Irish-registered Ryanair 737 over Poland still counts for Ireland. That is why small leasing hubs rank so high. Our glossary defines every term.

Why the count swings through the day

Global traffic rises and falls in a daily wave:

  • Peak: when Europe's afternoon rush overlaps the US East Coast morning.
  • Quietest: roughly 03:00 to 05:00 UTC, before Asia wakes up.
  • Overnight: passenger flights thin out and cargo airlines take over.
  • Weekends: a few percent quieter for airlines, busier for private flying.

Watch the "fastest aircraft" tile in winter. Jet streams over the North Atlantic often push eastbound ground speeds past 700 knots. The plane is not flying faster through the air. The air itself is moving. Context for the numbers

Commercial trackers with the largest receiver networks typically see on the order of 20,000 aircraft aloft at the daily peak. The receiver coverage available here sees a large subset of that traffic - So treat these figures as a live sample of the sky, not a census. How many planes are in the sky right now?

The live counter above is the honest answer for what this network currently receives. Industry-wide, anywhere from 8,000 aircraft in the overnight trough to more than 20,000 at the global peak are airborne at once.

Why is a small country like Malta so high on the list?

Aircraft leasing and AOC registration. Malta, Ireland and similar registries host large leased fleets that fly all over the world under those flags.

What counts as on the ground?

Aircraft whose transponder reports ground status: taxiing, holding short, or parked at a gate with power on. They appear grey on the live map.

Why did the total just jump or drop?

The total changes when a new cached source snapshot arrives, and receiver coverage fluctuates as aircraft move between covered and uncovered regions. Small step changes are normal.

When was this air traffic snapshot taken?

The UTC capture time is printed directly above the tables and updates with the receiver snapshot. It describes when the observations were collected, not when this explanatory page was published or edited.

Is this an official total of every aircraft?

No. It is a timestamped sample of transponders visible to the available receiver network. Aircraft outside coverage, filtered aircraft and aircraft not broadcasting are not included, so use it to understand the observed sample rather than as a census.
