About CGH

A busy domestic-only airport sitting just eight kilometres from downtown São Paulo, completely surrounded by the city. It handles the heavily used air shuttle to Rio de Janeiro's Santos Dumont airport, one of the densest air routes in the Americas. Its short runways and tight urban setting mean strict noise curfews and weight restrictions apply.

Congonhas Airport opened in 1936 on a plateau at the edge of Sao Paulo, built partly because an older field kept flooding. That older field, Campo de Marte, sat too low and very often turned to mud after storms. Its handsome art deco terminal, finished in 1940 and still used today, was for years the most modern airport building in Brazil.

The city grew around it fast, and by the 1950s Congonhas was Brazil's busiest airport, boxed in by neighborhoods with no room to grow. When Guarulhos opened in 1985, it took over international flights, but Congonhas kept the shuttle to Rio de Janeiro, called the Ponte Aerea, or air bridge, running since 1959. That shuttle once let travelers show up without a booking and board the next scheduled flight.

Its short runways and tight location make it hard to fly into. A 2007 accident, when a jet overran the main runway in heavy rain and hit a building, killing 199 people, forced major safety changes to runway grooving and drainage systems. Congonhas today is strictly domestic, tightly controlled by slots, meaning scheduled time windows airlines are allowed to use for takeoff and landing, and a night curfew.

How CGH operates today

Congonhas has two parallel runways, but only 17R/35L, at roughly 1,940 meters, is used by airliners. The shorter strip serves general aviation and taxiing planes. The main runway sits above city streets and demands careful handling in rain. Movements are capped by slots and a night curfew to limit noise.

Only domestic flights are scheduled, flown mostly by Gol, Latam, and Azul with fast turnarounds between short hops. The terminal, built around the 1940 art deco original, always runs short of space. Business aviation is heavy, with private jets and helicopters common around one of the world's largest corporate aircraft markets.

Top routes from CGH

DestinationMain airlinesWhy it matters
Rio de Janeiro (SDU) Gol, Latam, Azul The Ponte Aerea air bridge, one of the densest city center to city center shuttles in the world.
Brasilia (BSB) Gol, Latam Links Brazilian business with the federal government, flown many times daily on narrowbodies.
Belo Horizonte (CNF) Gol, Latam, Azul A short high frequency route between Brazil's largest city and its third largest metropolitan area.
Porto Alegre (POA) Gol, Latam, Azul The main southern business route, valued because Congonhas sits inside Sao Paulo itself.
Curitiba (CWB) Gol, Latam, Azul A short hop that competes with a long bus journey and stays busy through the working week.

Facts about CGH

  • The 1940 art deco terminal is a protected building and still forms the core of the passenger area.
  • The Rio de Janeiro air bridge, running since 1959, once let passengers turn up without a reservation and board the next departure.
  • Only one of the two parallel runways is used by airliners, and at roughly 1,940 meters it is short for a major city airport.
  • Sao Paulo's helicopter fleet, one of the largest of any city in the world, operates around and above the airport.

A rooftop terrace above the terminal is open to the public, a rare thing at a major airport, putting spotters beside the taxiway with the city skyline behind. What is the airport code for São Paulo/Congonhas Airport?

São Paulo/Congonhas Airport uses the IATA code CGH on tickets and baggage tags, and the ICAO code SBSP in flight plans and on radar. The leading “S” in SBSP is the region marker: ICAO codes are grouped geographically, which is why airports near each other usually share their first letter or two while their IATA codes look unrelated.

How many runways does CGH have?

São Paulo/Congonhas Airport operates 2 runways across 1 passenger terminal. The field sits at 2,631 ft above sea level.

How busy is CGH?

Can I track flights at CGH live?

Yes. The map on this page shows every aircraft broadcasting its position within about 55 km of São Paulo/Congonhas Airport, and there are 24 in range as this page loaded. The boards split them into departures, arrivals and traffic passing overhead, all timed in America/Sao_Paulo.
