About easyJet

One of Europe's largest low-cost carriers, flying an all-Airbus A320-family fleet from bases across the UK and continental Europe. Unlike Ryanair it focuses on primary airports such as Gatwick, Geneva and Milan. Its easyJet holidays package business has become a major profit driver.

easyJet was founded in March 1995. Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, who was then a 28-year-old Greek-Cypriot shipping heir, leased two Boeing 737s. They flew from London Luton to Glasgow and Edinburgh. Seats were sold only by phone. The booking number was painted on each plane in giant orange digits. Fares were promised to be 'as cheap as a pair of jeans'. The airline also moved online early.

It sold its first seat on easyJet.com in 1998. Most bookings soon came through the website. The ITV documentary series 'Airline' made the brand famous across Britain. easyJet joined the London Stock Exchange in 2000. In 2002 it bought rival Go Fly from British Airways. A big A319 order then made it all-Airbus. After Brexit it set up easyJet Europe in Austria to keep its EU flying rights.

Unlike Ryanair, easyJet chose busy main airports such as Gatwick, Geneva, Amsterdam, and Milan Malpensa. It chased business travelers as well as holidaymakers. The airline survived heavy pandemic losses and turned down a takeover offer in 2021. Since then it has built easyJet holidays into a big earner. easyJet now carries around 90 million passengers a year across Europe. It keeps opening new bases on the continent.

The fleet

easyJet flies roughly 340 Airbus jets and nothing else, split between easyJet UK, easyJet Europe, and easyJet Switzerland. A319s and A320s do most of the work. The fleet is moving toward larger A320neos and A321neos to cut costs and emissions.

Well over 100 A320neo-family jets are due through the early 2030s, and it holds rights to buy more. Older A319s leave as the new jets arrive, which keeps the average fleet age low.
