Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport opened on March 8, 1974 at Roissy-en-France, northeast of Paris, conceived in the 1960s as a grand national project to give France an airport worthy of the jet age. Architect Paul Andreu designed the radical circular Terminal 1, a concrete drum threaded with plexiglass travel tubes that remains one of aviation's most distinctive buildings. The airport was named for General Charles de Gaulle, leader of Free France and founder of the Fifth Republic.

Terminal 2 grew in stages from 1982 onward as the sprawling home of Air France, its lettered halls 2A through 2G eventually stretching for kilometers, joined by the low-cost Terminal 3. A section of Terminal 2E's roof collapsed in 2004 shortly after opening, killing four people, and was rebuilt.

CDG became a global crossroads: Concorde flew from here, FedEx built its principal European hub on the airfield. The TGV station beneath Terminal 2 pioneered air-rail integration. Iranian exile Mehran Karimi Nasseri famously lived in Terminal 1 for 18 years, inspiring the film "The Terminal." Today CDG is continental Europe's busiest airport, hub of Air France-KLM's southern arm, handling more than 70 million passengers annually.

How CDG operates today

Charles de Gaulle operates four parallel runways in two widely separated doublets, flown in segregated mode with outer runways for landings and inner for takeoffs, giving high capacity across a vast 32-square-kilometer site. Air France concentrates its global hub at Terminal 2, running coordinated banks with SkyTeam partners, while Star and oneworld carriers use Terminal 1 and low-cost airlines Terminal 3.

The CDGVAL automated shuttle links terminals and parking. CDG is also Europe's leading cargo airport by tonnage in many years, anchored by FedEx's biggest hub outside the United States. The TGV station beneath Terminal 2 lets high-speed trains substitute for short-haul feeder flights.
