About All Nippon Airways

Japan's largest airline and a five-star Skytrax carrier, known for impeccable punctuality and service. It was the global launch customer of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner and operates three whale-liveried A380s to Honolulu. ANA is a Star Alliance member with dual Tokyo hubs at Haneda and Narita.

All Nippon Airways began in December 1952 as Japan Helicopter and Aeroplane Transports. It owned just two helicopters and started once postwar limits on Japanese aviation were lifted. After merging with Far East Airlines in 1957, it took the All Nippon Airways name. It became Japan's biggest domestic airline, moving millions between Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo. Today it is still Japan's largest airline by revenue and fleet.

Those home routes were among the busiest in the world. ANA even flew Boeing 747s fitted with more than 500 seats on short domestic hops. For decades it stayed mostly at home while Japan Airlines held the international role. Scheduled flights abroad finally began in 1986, with a route to Guam. ANA joined Star Alliance in 1999 and spread across Asia, Europe, and North America.

It made history as the launch customer of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The first one arrived in September 2011. ANA is now the largest 787 operator. Skytrax gave it five stars, and it is known for strict on-time service. ANA Holdings also runs budget airline Peach Aviation and started the leisure brand AirJapan in 2024. Its three Airbus A380s, painted as Hawaiian sea turtles, fly only between Tokyo and Honolulu.

The fleet

ANA flies around 240 aircraft and is the world's largest Boeing 787 operator, using the 787-8, 787-9, and 787-10 at home and abroad. Boeing 777-300ERs also serve long routes and will be replaced by Boeing 777-9s on order.

Home trunk routes use Boeing 767s, 787s, and Airbus A321s, with Bombardier Q400 turboprops inherited through Mitsubishi at smaller airports. Three Flying Honu A380s serve Honolulu only. Orders cover 777-9s, more 787s, A321neos, and Boeing 737 MAX 8s, plus planes for Peach and AirJapan.
