Boston Logan International Airport opened in September 1923 as Boston Airport, a modest Army airfield built on tidal mudflats at Jeffries Point in East Boston. Over the following decades the airport expanded almost entirely on landfill pushed out into Boston Harbor, eventually consuming what had been Governors, Noddle's, and Apple islands. In 1943 it was named for Lieutenant General Edward Lawrence Logan, a Spanish-American War veteran and South Boston civic leader who, curiously, never flew in an airplane.

Postwar growth brought international service, and by the jet age Logan had become New England's dominant gateway. The Massachusetts Port Authority took over in 1959 and progressively built the terminal complex lettered A through E. Logan's compact 2,400-acre footprint, tiny for a major US airport, forced creative solutions, including a six-runway layout squeezed between harbor channels.

The airport gained somber notoriety on September 11, 2001, when the two aircraft that struck the World Trade Center departed from Logan, an event that reshaped American aviation security. Since the 2000s Logan has boomed as JetBlue's largest focus city and a fast-growing Delta hub, adding nonstop links across Europe, Asia. The Middle East and regularly exceeding 40 million passengers a year.

Logan squeezes six runways onto a compact harbor-side site, using intersecting orientations that let controllers adapt to New England's shifting winds, including the unusual one-way runway 14/32 for noise relief over the harbor. Four terminals (A, B, C, E) ring a central core, with JetBlue and Delta as the largest operators and American and United close behind; Terminal E hosts a fast-growing international lineup.

There is no single dominant hub carrier, making Logan primarily an origin-and-destination market powered by universities, biotech, and finance. Water shuttles, the MBTA Blue and Silver lines, and harbor tunnels connect the airport to downtown, barely two miles away.
