The story of the Boeing 777-200ER

Boeing launched the 777 in October 1990 with an order from United Airlines. The design was unusual from the start. Eight major airlines helped shape the cabin, systems and cockpit. Boeing made it the company's first fly-by-wire airliner and drew the whole aircraft on computers, with no physical mockup. The process took longer, but the finished jet fit airline needs closely. Airlines had never had that much say before.

The prototype flew on June 12, 1994, and United began service on June 7, 1995, from London to Washington. The type earned 180-minute ETOPS approval on the day it entered service, a first, so it could cross oceans on two engines right away. That approval reshaped how airlines planned ocean crossings, and rivals had nothing to match it. Twinjets could suddenly do work once reserved for four engines.

The longer-range 777-200ER followed in 1997 and became the family's early best seller at British Airways, United, American and Air France. Together the two models topped 500 deliveries and killed off the market for three- and four-engine jets of similar size. Many are now converted to freighters, and the wider 777 family has passed 2,000 orders. Surviving -200ERs fly mainly with United, American and leisure carriers.

Design and engineering

The 777-200 brought fly-by-wire to Boeing, where computers turn the pilot's inputs into control movements. Boeing kept conventional control yokes and added artificial feel, so crews adapt easily, and every 777 shares one type rating. Airlines could pick the Pratt & Whitney PW4000, Rolls-Royce Trent 800 or General Electric GE90.

Each produced 74,000 to 94,000 pounds of thrust, the largest turbofans of their day. The round fuselage fits nine seats across, six wheels per bogie remove any need for center gear. An optional folding wingtip was offered but never bought.
