About DOH

The hub of Qatar Airways and multiple-time winner of Skytrax's World's Best Airport award. Its giant Lamp Bear sculpture and indoor Orchard garden are signature sights. Built partly on reclaimed land, it replaced the old Doha International in 2014.

Hamad International Airport opened on April 30, 2014, replacing the old Doha International Airport that Qatar Airways had explosively outgrown. Built on 22 square kilometers east of Doha, roughly half of it land reclaimed from the Persian Gulf, the airport was conceived as a statement project: an oasis-themed terminal with wave-inspired roofs, water motifs. Capacity designed around the national carrier's ambition to connect every continent through Doha.

The airport quickly became known for its art as much as its aviation, headlined by Urs Fischer's seven-meter "Lamp Bear," a giant yellow teddy bear under a desk lamp in the central atrium. Expansion ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup added the ORCHARD, a lush indoor tropical garden beneath a 268-meter skylight, lifting capacity toward 58 million passengers, with further phases targeting 70 million.

Hamad has repeatedly been named the world's best airport by Skytrax, taking the title in 2021, 2022, and 2024, trading it with Singapore's Changi. As the exclusive hub of Qatar Airways and a major cargo powerhouse, Hamad turned tiny Qatar into one of the world's great aviation crossroads, funneling tens of millions of transfer passengers between Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

How DOH operates today

Hamad International operates two of the longest parallel runways in the world, built to handle fully loaded ultra-long-haul departures in extreme heat, flanking a compact but expanding terminal whose concourses radiate from the Lamp Bear atrium. Qatar Airways operates virtually all traffic as a single coordinated hub, with two great daily connection waves timed so that flights from Europe, Africa.

The Americas exchange passengers with Asia and Australia in the early morning and late evening. Qatar Airways Cargo, one of the largest international freight carriers, runs a major hub on the airfield. The airport's air-conditioned jet bridges, automated people mover, and transfer-optimized layout serve a passenger base that is overwhelmingly connecting rather than local.
