Live flights at Auckland Airport (AKL)

Auckland Airport opened for commercial service in January 1966 on the shores of Manukau Harbour at Mangere, taking over from the military airfield at Whenuapai that had handled the city's civil flights. The site had aviation roots reaching back to the 1920s, when the Auckland Aero Club flew from farmland there. The 1966 opening was celebrated with a large air pageant, and international jet services quickly followed as New Zealand joined the jet age.

A dedicated international terminal opened in 1977 and was later named for pioneering aviator Jean Batten, who flew solo from England to New Zealand in 1936. The airport company was corporatized in 1988 and publicly listed in 1998, becoming one of New Zealand's largest listed companies.

As the home base of Air New Zealand, Auckland grew into the country's dominant gateway, handling roughly three-quarters of all international visitors arriving by air. Major projects in the 2010s and 2020s have included expanded international departure areas, a program to integrate domestic jet flying into the international terminal. Long-term safeguarding of land for a second runway, positioning Auckland for decades of growth as New Zealand's primary connection to the world.

Auckland operates from a single main runway (05R/23L) beside Manukau Harbour, which handles everything from regional turboprops to long-haul widebodies and makes efficient sequencing critical at peak times. The international terminal and the older domestic terminal sit a short walk apart, with a major project underway to consolidate domestic jet operations into an expanded integrated terminal.

Air New Zealand dominates both domestic and long-haul schedules, while Qantas, Jetstar. A wide range of Asian, North American, and Pacific carriers fill out the timetable. The airport is also New Zealand's most important air cargo gateway for high-value exports such as seafood and pharmaceuticals.
