About IPC

The most remote commercial airport in the world, serving Easter Island roughly 3,700 kilometres off the coast of Chile. Its single runway was lengthened by NASA in the 1980s so it could act as an emergency landing site for the Space Shuttle. Scheduled service is essentially limited to flights from Santiago, with an occasional link to Tahiti.

Mataveri Airport sits on Rapa Nui, also called Easter Island, roughly 3,700 kilometers west of the Chilean mainland. People often call it the most remote commercial airport in the world. A small landing strip was first built in the 1960s. In 1967 the Chilean airline LAN began flying there, ending the island's isolation and replacing the occasional supply ship that had been its only regular contact with the outside world.

In 1986 and 1987, NASA and the US Air Force paid to lengthen and strengthen the runway. The goal was to let it serve as an emergency abort landing site for the Space Shuttle if a mission went wrong. The work was controversial among islanders. It left Mataveri with a runway of about 3,300 meters, far longer than the island's own air traffic actually needs.

That length lets huge widebody jets land there, giving the island both a lifeline and a role as an emergency stop for planes crossing the South Pacific. Tourism then grew steadily until Chile capped visitor numbers by law in 2018. The island closed entirely to outsiders for more than two years during the pandemic. Flights today still remain the only practical way in or out.

How IPC operates today

Mataveri has a single runway, 10/28, about 3,300 meters long, extraordinarily long for an island with only a few thousand people. It exists mainly because of the old Space Shuttle backup program. The terminal is small and handles only a handful of flights each week. LATAM is the sole scheduled airline, flying Boeing 787 widebody jets from Santiago and sometimes continuing on to Papeete.

Because there is no other airport within reach, flights must carry extra fuel in case they cannot land. They also follow strict safety rules made for this route. If a plane must divert, it has to turn back to the mainland. Fuel, spare parts, and most supplies arrive either on the same aircraft or by ship.

Top routes from IPC

DestinationMain airlinesWhy it matters
Santiago (SCL) LATAM The island's year round lifeline and by far its busiest route, flown with Boeing 787s.
Papeete (PPT) LATAM The onward Pacific leg, the only service from the island that does not touch the Chilean mainland.
Lima (LIM) LATAM Not a nonstop; the standard one stop connection through Santiago for travelers heading north.
Sao Paulo (GRU) LATAM Not a nonstop; the usual one stop routing via Santiago for arrivals from Brazil and Europe.
Auckland (AKL) LATAM Not a nonstop; the historic westbound path continued from Papeete on to New Zealand.

Facts about IPC

  • Mataveri is generally considered the most remote commercial airport in the world, over 3,700 kilometers from the nearest mainland.
  • NASA helped pay to lengthen the runway in the 1980s so it could serve as a Space Shuttle emergency landing site.
  • There is no alternate airport within range, so flights must carry enough fuel to return to Chile if they cannot land.
  • Scheduled air service only began in 1967; before that the island depended on occasional ships.

Plane spotting at IPC

The runway runs right along the edge of Hanga Roa, so the arrival of the single widebody is effectively a village event, easily watched from the road beside the fence. A LATAM 787 against the Pacific and the island's volcanic slopes is the whole show. New to spotting? Start with our aircraft identification guide and the world's best spotting airports.

Frequently asked questions about IPC

What is the airport code for Mataveri International Airport?

Mataveri International Airport uses the IATA code IPC on tickets and baggage tags, and the ICAO code SCIP in flight plans and on radar. The leading “S” in SCIP is the region marker: ICAO codes are grouped geographically, which is why airports near each other usually share their first letter or two while their IATA codes look unrelated.

How many runways does IPC have?

Mataveri International Airport operates 1 runway across 1 passenger terminal. The field sits at 227 ft above sea level.

How busy is IPC?

This reference profile lists roughly 0.2 million annual passengers for Mataveri International Airport. You can see aircraft observed departing, arriving and overhead on this page, taken from live ADS-B broadcasts.

What time zone is IPC in?

Mataveri International Airport operates on Pacific/Easter local time. Scheduled departure and arrival times for this airport are always published in local time, not UTC.

How many terminals does IPC have?

This reference lists Mataveri International Airport with 1 passenger terminal. Check the airport or operating airline for the terminal assigned to a specific flight.

Can I track flights at IPC live?
