About LAS

Commercial aviation moved to the current site south of Las Vegas in 1948, when McCarran Field opened, named for Nevada Senator Pat McCarran. The airport grew in lockstep with the casino resorts rising along the nearby Strip. Its terminals became famous for a uniquely Nevadan touch: banks of slot machines greeting travelers at the gates. Jet-age expansion brought a modern terminal in 1963. The airport rode successive Las Vegas booms, from the Rat Pack era through the megaresort explosion of the 1990s.

Terminal 3 opened in 2012 to handle international flights. In December 2021 the airport was renamed Harry Reid International after the longtime Senate majority leader from Nevada, retiring the McCarran name.

Today it ranks among the busiest airports in the United States despite functioning almost entirely as an origin-and-destination leisure gateway rather than a connecting hub. Southwest Airlines carries the largest share of passengers, while Allegiant, Spirit and Frontier maintain major bases.
