About PTY

Known as the Hub of the Americas, Tocumen is the home of Copa Airlines and connects more cities in Latin America nonstop than any other airport. Its position on the isthmus allows narrowbody aircraft to reach both North and South America. Terminal 2 doubled the airport's capacity in 2019.

Tocumen International opened in 1947 east of Panama City, inaugurated by President Enrique A. Jiménez as a modern replacement for the aging Paitilla airfield. Its location beside the crossroads of the Americas made it a natural refueling and connecting point in the propeller era. A larger terminal, today's Terminal 1, opened in the 1970s to handle jet traffic. The original terminal building survives nearby as a cargo facility, a reminder of the airport's long service to Panama's aviation ambitions.

The airport's modern identity was forged by Copa Airlines, which from the 1990s transformed Tocumen into the self-styled Hub of the Americas, using Panama's central position so that single-aisle jets could reach almost any major city in the hemisphere nonstop. A second runway and successive terminal expansions supported relentless growth.

The Norman Foster-designed Terminal 2 opened in phases between 2019 and 2022, adding twenty new gates. Because Panama's domestic flights use Albrook airport in the city, virtually every passenger at Tocumen is an international traveler. The airport now connects more destinations in the Americas than any rival in the region, anchoring Panama's role as a trade and banking crossroads.

How PTY operates today

Tocumen operates two parallel runways and two connected terminals, with Copa Airlines running tightly timed connecting banks that sweep in from North America and fan out across South America and the Caribbean a few hours later. Terminal 2, opened in phases through 2022, houses much of the widebody and international growth, while Terminal 1 continues to serve Copa's core operation.

Nearly all traffic is international, so immigration and transit flows are engineered for speed. The airport also hosts a growing cargo zone tied to the Colón Free Trade Zone and Panama's logistics economy.
