Munich's old airport at Riem, opened in 1939, was surrounded by the growing city and could not expand, so Bavaria selected a new site in the Erdinger Moos marshland northeast of Munich in 1969.

Lawsuits from local communities delayed the project for years, and construction did not begin in earnest until 1980. On the night of May 16-17, 1992, one of aviation's great logistical feats took place: the entire airport moved from Riem to the new field in a single overnight convoy, and Franz Josef Strauss Airport, named for the long-serving Bavarian premier and aviation enthusiast, opened for business the next morning without missing a scheduled day.

Growth came quickly as Lufthansa developed Munich into its second hub after Frankfurt. Terminal 2 opened in 2003, unusual worldwide for being jointly financed and operated by the airport company and Lufthansa.

A midfield satellite building doubled Terminal 2's capacity in 2016. Skytrax named Munich Europe's first five-star airport in 2015, a nod to its beer garden, visitor park, and famously calm atmosphere. A long-planned third runway was approved but shelved indefinitely in the 2020s after political and environmental opposition, leaving the two parallel runways to carry all traffic.

How MUC operates today

Munich operates two widely spaced 4,000-meter parallel runways that allow fully independent simultaneous operations, wrapped around a central area between Terminal 1 for Star Alliance outsiders and Terminal 2, which Lufthansa co-owns and fills with its hub banks and Star Alliance partners. The 2016 satellite concourse, reached by an underground people mover, handles much of Terminal 2's traffic.

Munich is Lufthansa's second hub and its main base for long-haul aircraft outside Frankfurt, including the A380's return. Between the terminals, the covered Munich Airport Center hosts shops, a Christmas market, and the Airbräu brewery.
