The gravest crisis came in October 2001, when Swissair, the "flying bank," was dramatically grounded in bankruptcy, stranding passengers worldwide and shaking Swiss identity. Successor Swiss International Air Lines, later absorbed into the Lufthansa Group, rebuilt the hub. The midfield Dock E concourse, reached by the Skymetro underground shuttle famous for its yodeling and cowbell soundscape, anchors long-haul operations.
Disputes with Germany over morning and weekend approach restrictions across the border have shaped runway usage patterns for decades. In 2020 the airport opened The Circle, a vast Riken Yamamoto-designed complex of hotels, offices. Shops, cementing Zurich's standing as one of Europe's most polished and punctual gateways.
