Kuala Lumpur International Airport opened in June 1998 at Sepang, replacing the cramped Subang airport as Malaysia's global gateway just in time for the Commonwealth Games hosted by the capital that year.

Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa designed the complex around the philosophy of 'airport in the forest, forest in the airport,' and a patch of genuine Malaysian rainforest was planted inside the satellite terminal, where travelers can walk a jungle boardwalk between flights. The airport was among the most ambitious of Asia's late-1990s mega-projects, built with room to grow on a vast plantation site.

Its second act came with the rise of AirAsia, which turned Kuala Lumpur into the low-cost capital of Asia. After outgrowing a basic budget terminal, AirAsia moved into klia2 in 2014, one of the largest terminals ever built specifically for low-cost carriers.

Malaysia Airlines maintains its full-service hub in the original terminal, now called Terminal 1. The KLIA Ekspres rail link connects the airport to the city in under half an hour. The surrounding Aeropolis has developed into a significant cargo and logistics zone for Southeast Asia.

How KUL operates today

KUL operates three runways serving two major terminals: Terminal 1, the Kurokawa-designed original with its satellite and rainforest, hosts Malaysia Airlines and full-service carriers. The sprawling Terminal 2 (klia2) is the fortress of AirAsia and other budget airlines.

An automated Aerotrain links Terminal 1 with its satellite, and the KLIA Ekspres provides a nonstop rail ride to central Kuala Lumpur. The airport is one of Southeast Asia's principal hubs, with the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore corridor ranking as the busiest international route in the world. Its cargo operations anchor the surrounding KLIA Aeropolis logistics zone.
